the reason I skipped Lion entirely, you couldn't turn off most of the new stuff that caused me problems in my work flow until Mountain Lion. I don't begrudge anyone the new system, I can see how it might be amazing, but not for me so I'm SO happy they didn't forget a check box to turn it OFF (i.e. SecondBar is a powerful Mac dual monitor utility that allows you to have a functional menu bar for your dual monitor setup. If you find you're going from one extreme to a menu bar on a regular basis your work flow is probably not very streamlined (mouse time is not typically as productive as keyboard time, depends on what you're doing of course). So now at least I can leave the clamshell open (a bit) to keep it cooler. I was then able to open the clamshell, but launch preferences FROM THE EXTERNAL screen which allowed me to mirror the monitors.
The first two are alternative dock apps that have multiple monitor support. And, the menu bar showed up on my external screen even when it was the 2nd screen. I have not tried these myself, but I am aware of Dragthing, Dock-it, Dock Spaces. As for the dock, there are less complete solutions available.
